About macOS High Sierra :
macOS High Sierra is the latest version of Apple’s desktop OS. The platform offers a new file storage system, supports High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) technology and Apple’s advanced Metal technology, which opens up capabilities such as machine learning or virtual reality content creation. macOS High Sierra also improves many of the apps Mac users use every day, like Photos, Safari, and Mail.
Apple File System
Apple’s performance-enhanced file system (APFS) is reliable and secure. The architecture is optimized for modern high-capacity storage technologies. APFS allows you to instantly perform everyday tasks such as copying files or folders, ensures the safety of data in the event of power outages and system failures, and also reliably protects files with built-in encryption. macOS High Sierra is fully compatible with previously formatted HFS read-write drives and is designed to keep up with future advances in storage technology.
Highly efficient video encoding
Support for the industry standard HEVC (H.265) allows you to stream and stream high-quality 4K video files in up to 40% less space than the existing H.264 standard. With HEVC technology, Apple has been able to enable high-quality video streaming over networks that previously only supported HD video streaming. And with hardware acceleration features on the new iMac and MacBook Pro, HEVC editing and encoding processes are fast and energy-efficient.
Metal 2
Metal is the fastest way to get the most out of your Mac processor. Metal 2 technology, with an improved API and increased performance, allows developers to make applications even faster. It now supports machine learning capabilities used for computer vision, speech recognition and natural language processing. The most demanding users will have access to external GPUs with a combination of Thunderbolt 3 and Metal 2 technologies. The External Graphics Developer Kit gives developers all the software and hardware capabilities they need to enhance their applications.
A virtual reality
Building on the performance of Metal 2 and the new Macs, macOS High Sierra supports virtual reality content creation capabilities for the first time, so developers can create new games, 3D and virtual reality content on the Mac. Leading virtual reality companies are partnering with Apple to develop new tools for the Mac that will be available later this year. For example, Valve is optimizing the virtual reality platform SteamVR for macOS and will provide support for the HTC Vive headset, while Unity and Epic are customizing their virtual reality content development tools for macOS. Additionally, later this year, Final Cut Pro X will add support for professional 360-degree streams with the ability to import, edit, and export spherical video.
Mac app improvements
The Photos app in macOS High Sierra features a new always-on sidebar with albums and sorting tools. The updated editing mode includes powerful new tools: Curves for fine-tuning color and contrast, and Defined Color for changing the selected color. You can now apply fun effects to your Live Photos, and the Memories feature organizes your photos and videos according to new themes. The Photos app now supports external photo editors, so you can open Photoshop, Pixelmator, and other apps directly from Photos, with edits saved in your Photos library. For the first time, with support for third-party extensions, users can print and share images via Animoto, ifolor, Shutterfly, WhiteWall and Wix directly from the Photos app.
If you have a developer account, you can download macOS High Sierra beta right now.
Additional app improvements:
In Safari, you can automatically enable Reader mode to open articles in a concise, easy-to-read format, and Autoplay Blocking prevents audio media from playing automatically in the browser.
Safari’s Intelligent Tracking Prevention feature uses machine learning to detect and remove data that advertisers use to track your online activity.
Searching in Mail becomes faster and easier thanks to Top Hits: current messages appear at the top of the list.
Siri’s voice on Mac is more natural and expressive, and when you use Apple Music, the voice assistant takes your preferences into account, creates relevant playlists and answers questions about your music.
Simple tables have been added to Notes – now the user can type text in cells, edit tables, and move rows and columns.
Spotlight can find flight information, including arrival and departure times, flight delays, terminal or gate information, and even a map of your flight.
iCloud File Sharing lets you share any file from iCloud Drive and opens up new collaboration possibilities.
